Fairly solid, very old school Italian restaurant. I have been to the old location on Cicero many times. Saw the note on the door and drove over to the new place. They have trimmed down the free extras that come before your meal. No more pasta salad, etc... On the positive side, they make their own olive oil. The bread and olive oil were delicious -- the highlight of the meal. For entree I had manicotti plus a side of meatball and Italian sausage. The meat was good, the manicotti was pretty good. The red sauce was on the salty side. Overall I'd say the meal was slightly over-priced for the quality but I will probably be back for nostalgia and a decent meal.

I'm always willing to try any new restaurant along this strench of 111st street. Papa Joe's has moved from the old location on Cicero to the old O'Connors Pub. I don't know how the old place was, but by judging the amount of seniors there, it looked like a tour stop for AARP. When the air kicked on, they all complained right away. Opted for the lasagna, my go to Italian dish. Tried the minestone soup which very tasty and hot, but came in a very small cup. Along with the hot bread, which was presliced a thick slice. The lasagna was brought out to the table in a reasonable amount of time and it was a nice size portion. But it looked like it fell over on the dish and was not stacked upright. The sauce had a off taste to it, my dining companion said it had a sour taste to it. I do favor a sweet sauce and maybe that is what I was expecting. Our waitress was on her game and checked our table enough times without being disruptive. The menu seems to have a limited amount of items on it. They also have a carry out section seperate from the dining area. They offer valet parking, but don't know if that is a every day item. The parking lot has a limited amount of spaces.

I grew up eating at papa joe's and I really do love it. Papa Joe's isnt your typical upscale italian restaurant, but it's perfect for the location. It's casual, comfortable, and great for families. Also, it's affordable and the portions are huge. They have two for one pasta on Tuesday nights, perfect for a weeknight dinner. I've been getting the cheese ravioli as long as I can remember. I love their red sauce so much I don't want to get anything else. With a dinner entree, you get warm bread, soup, salad, pasta salad, and coleslaw before you even get your food. I highly doubt anyone leaves here hungry.

Had a late Christmas Eve lunch w/my hubby, mom, dad bro and sis. Susan was our waitress and was very accommodating. I had the brushetta flat bread which was excellent and I am very fussy about flatbread. Mom had prime rib, Lou & Gary had fish and chips and to be honest I am not sure what Kim and Gary ordered but everyone was satisfied and very full; generous portions. The soups are above excellent. The atmosphere was warm and the dining room was nicely decorated for Christmas. Have previously attended a shower here and was amazed at the quality of the food; will definitely go back.

Best pizza in the area. They are extremely generous to the local fire departments and I have never had a bad thing on the entire menu. Great business people, I highly recommend them to anyone!!!!

Papa Joe's was one of the regular restaurants from my childhood. The glorious spinach deep dish pizza is full of spinachy, tomatoey goodness. Tastes like Chicago.

I haven't been here for about four years. Last time the food was so-so. I went there this past weekend with my husband and father-in-law. The fish was not even good in my husband's dish and the peas were hard as a rock in mine. The waitress was almost non-existent. I am not even sure why we tipped her or paid for our food. When we got home we all had upset stomachs. Stomach bug? Highly doubtful!

Been going there since they opened. Best pizza on the south side! Many entertaining Saturday nights spent at their bar.

Decor is dated and dark! Christmas lights and artificial flowers makes for a confusing decor also. There is duck tape on the rips of the booth seats! The seafood pasta dish of shrimp & crabmeat has minimum shrimp and imitation crabmeat ! Large portions of sub average food! However, wait staff is pleasant & friendly. Restaurant Impossible please come here!

  • Marge P.

Waitress was attentive. Decor is very dated. Food was average. Had appetizer platter, ribs..nothing to rave about. Bread and olive oil were the highlight for us. May try the pizza if we return. Pasta special 2 for 1 seems to be a big hit with the seniors. Please repair the vinyl booths with the duct tape!! Plastic flowers?? We were the only diners at 2pm on a weekday..cause for alarm??

Good independent family restaurant. Bread is awesome! Service is not awesome, but that might just be Chicago. Enjoyed the Linguini and Clam Sauce. Tons of clams and large portion. WARNING: overheard they a moving later this month, but staying in the neighborhood. Good choice for authentic Italian

This place is a hidden gem! If you haven't yet been here you need to go. The service is excellent and the food is phenomenal. Everything from the apps to the entrées and desserts are very well done. This is a great place to take friends and family.

This is a review of the pizza only. It's all right. I love square pizzas, although they're always disappointing. This pizza is round, but it's cut into square slices. Either that, or it is a square with rounded corners, kind of like a rhomboid hockey rink. I've been told that the quality has taken a nasty dive over the past decade or so. I don't know whether this is true, as the first time I tried the pizza was in 2012. They should use higher quality cheese. The crust is fine; it may have been my favorite part. They offer and accept crazy coupons.

I had dinner at the new Papa Joe's at this address twice now. The first time, our waitress and our food was wonderful and the portions were large. I ordered one of their signature dishes, the chicken tetrazzini in the "small" size and had plenty left over to take home, which I like to do (don't want to cook you know). It is very loud in there if you eat in the same room as the bar. My second visit was quite disappointing in more ways than one Won't sit in the "bar" room again as the noise level was deafening and, even though we were sitting way in the back of the room, my friend and I could not hear each other talk. Horrible -- and funny thing is that there were only about 5-6 people at the bar. And, I do know that, as people drink, they get louder and louder, but this was deafening. We both ordered chicken parmesan and it was full price about $16 and a much smaller portion of food than the "small" version of the other pasta dish. My friend did not like the sauce at all, but she is very picky so not going with that. I thought it was okay and the chicken was good (small but good) and a handful of spaghetti at the most. Since spaghetti is cheap, most restaurants give you a large portion of it, but the spaghetti and the chicken portions were small. Our waitress was okay but it appeared to be an artificial nice, while our previous waitress was super. I do not remember our waitress' name, but perhaps my friend might. I asked her for bread when we sat down and I was told "I will bring you some ONLY if you are ordering dinner. I have seen other restaurants and business "cheap" themselves right out of business before and I am worried about this happening to Papa Joe's as I have always liked this restaurant. First, all signature items were taken away, relish tray (how much does a small relish tray cost anyway), salads, etc. gone, no soup and salad and now stingy entrees. I will probably go back and sit in the non-bar room, although it is quite small and crowded, but so was the other restaurant. Extremely disappointed in this visit which was on Tuesday, September 8, at approximately 4:30 p.m. My friend and I sat at the table against the wall, still not far enough away from that noisy bar. Need to fix the acoustics somehow. Chicken Parmesan won't be my next order, though. Not very good. And, the prices are not that cheap, although one waitress tried to justify taking the extras away but saying, well, it was either that or raise the prices. To clarify, this happened at the old restaurant. I think I like nicer waitresses. Back to the new restaurant, I paid for the meal, gave her a sizable tip even though our service was poor and she didn't even acknowledge us on the way out. Now, that I am writing this down, I am getting angrier, so perhaps I will wait awhile before I go back.

Haven been to the papa joes when they were on Cicero in Oaklawn, was very good. Recently went to the new location with friends. Very disappointed. Cream of chicken soup was so salty. The waitress hardly made an effort, was very loud inside. We had pizza which was ok but looked at the main menu and thought the prices were very high. I will stick to Rocco's in tinley Pk. Sad to say will not be back to papa joes.

Loved the old location. They definitely went cheap. Bread not warm looks like a bowling alley restaurant almost no parking . Everything cheaper but the price of the food. .

Not a great experience. My husband and I went there for dinner tonight. I ordered the linguine and clam it was sub par. Nothing to rave about. Cream sauce tasted like it was out of the can. My husband ordered the carbonara with pancetta, it was advertised with pancetta. When it arrived it clearly was bacon, thin cut. When he asked if it was in fact bacon not pancetta. The waitress was nice enough to go ask and came back and verified it was bacon.won't likely come back.

This place is average, and sometimes average is ok. Went early on a Saturday with a group of 6. The place was empty and we were seated right away. Service was great and our waitress was a lot of fun. Portions are huge - huge - huge. Prices are in the $13-$18 range for a platter of food. You also get soup and an array of not-so-great salads (ie, macaroni with italian dressing, soggy cole slaw, lettuce salad) for the group to share. I see this place as somewhere the $70+ crowd would go and eat. I had the Cioppino. Huge portion. The seafood was a littly chewy, which is not a good thing. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food, nothing was so spectacular though. I've heard their pizza is good - would like to try that sometime. Other than that, the place isn't that memorible.

I am so happy they have reopened the original Papa Joe's! We've been coming here for 20 years. Even though we now live 5 hours away, whenever we come to Chicago, we must eat at Papa Joe's and we must order a half pan of chicken tetrazinni from the catering menu to bring home to those who could not join us on the trip. When we manage to plan ahead, we ask them to partially freeze the take out pan to help it stay fresh for the drive. Have tried other things on the menu over the years, and they are indeed good, but the tetrazinni is what brings us back again and again.

It had been several years since I've eaten here but 2 for 1 pasta and lack of grocery shopping lead me here on a Tuesday night. You start with soup (good), pasta salad (meh), salad with Italian dressing (literally soaked in dressing) and bread. The bread was great but we found it strange that the server had to bring olive oil over each time. They don't leave it on the tables? Our main entrees were average. He had pasta with garlic and olive oil. I had to doctor up his leftovers to give it some flavor. I had the pasta with broccoli and Canadian bacon in cream sauce. Everything was ok. All of this food for about $15 with enough leftover for dinner the next night. We were the youngest people in the place by about 60 years! This probably won't be a regular spot for us with so many great choices in the area. I won't hesitate going on Tuesday nights though if I haven't made it to the store yet. **management should do something about the waitstaff smoking at the main entrance in between waiting on tables**Gross!!!

I stopped in for a quick lunch on a Friday. After I was seated my server came over and took my drink order, I asked her if the shrimp dish I was considering took and extra amount of time, as I had to be back to work soon. She said "no, you will have plenty of time". I placed my order and my food arrived a short time later. The food was really good, shrimp cooked just right, great marinara sauce and the pasta was just right as well. The server knew I was in a hurry and had my check ready, so I was able to get back to work with time to spare. Great service and very good food. I will probably make this my new Friday lunch spot.

I grew up with this place and the food. I'm a lifelong fan. I was here recently for a baby shower, and they were so accommodating and wonderful, and the food was exceptional. All of these people complaining about the décor, come on. It's old school, and I appreciate the old school feel. It's like you are eating in an old Italian restaurant, and you even see St. Joseph off to the side as well. The statue adds a nice feel to it. This is a great family place, any day or time of the week, and I have never had a bad meal here at all. I highly recommend it, and the staff is great too.

visited both locations after growing in Oak Lawn, I love Papa 20 years ago but now I will never go again!.......The food is really tasteless, bland is too kind......And Please REPLACE your seats.......I should take a gram culture, send it to a lab and post results, the owners must not spend any money to keep this restaurant up to date.....how is the kitchen where your food is being prepared?....Just saying

I used to frequent there for the pasta but unfortunately experienced the worst customer service. I ordered a delivery and there was a miscommunication with the order taker. When I called to see why my food was taking so long, over an hour, the manager said they had the order for pick up. The mistake was a honest one and I would've continued to give them my business but because of the way the manager spoke to me I would never go there or recommend them again. The manager was not apologetic and abruptly hung up on me before I could finish speaking. When I called back and told him I will not be giving them my business anymore he didn't care or was even apologetic. It's a shame that such a bad customer service experience from one manager has detoured me from ever coming to the establishment again. Personally, I have worked in the service industry and I would never complain about a business unless I really felt that it was justified. I hope the owner knows how terrible the manager deals with customer service issues.

Came here with the family because we were in the area. We had been to the Orland Park location and didn't think it would be worse. The place is very old and super dated. Ordered one of my kids, a small Alfredo and they charged me $9.95 plus $4.95 for the chicken! A regular fried chicken dinner was $12.95 with only soup or salad! The Orland location would include both soup and salad in the dinners as well as tomato/cucumber salad and pasta salad! My other child who is a small 12 yr. old was told she couldn't order a kids meal because she was over 9! We had to pay $12 for a small thin cheese pizza that was just ok. Another one of my children ordered a small pasta verde. It was pasta with lots of bland spinach and oil for $10! I ordered the soup du jour. they were out. I also ordered a small sampler appetizer which was mostly greasy zucchini. For $10! Our bill came to $75 for 1 appetizer 2 half order dinners a chicken dinner and a small pizza. Wish we would have gone anywhere else. One last note, I asked the waitress three times for lemon for my water and she brought it to me at the end of the meal! Felt so guilty about feeding my family this heavy and greasy food!

Total old school italian place right outta my childhood. Attentive service and delicious eats... pizza, salad, soup, sandwiches, and dessert. This place is a little off the regular path for me, but if in the area again I will stop in for some more yummy tummy moments

My fiance & I went here last night and it was horrible experience. We waited about 10 minutes for waitress to come to our table and then she sat for another 15 minutes with other waitresses talking. By the time we ordered our appetizer (Bruschetta), which came with 3 small portions of hard bread and tomatoes & olives. When she came back to get our entree meals, which was another 20 minutes later, we decided not to even order the pizza. You can get a better deal at Barracos or Palermos.

If you are wanting an expensive, small portion meal, with fancy decor then this isn't the place for you. However, if you are wanting 2 large portions of pasta for the price of one (Tuesday's only) and don't mind eating in a restaurant with decor from 1970 then this is right up your alley. They have a number of pasta's and sauces (with meat) to choose from. You also get bread, pasta salad, cole slaw, and a salad all for about $12-$13.

I went here with my grandparents last Friday and my grandmother is STILL upset about it. From the moment we sat down, our waitress was extremely rude. When we made dietary requests (no cheese), she acted like we she didn't hear us. We had to repeat ourselves several times, and she responded with sarcastic mumblings under her breath. She neglected to keep an eye on our table and fill our water in a timely fashion. I ended up having to leave the table and go to the bar to get a refill on water. When it was time for appetizers, she only brought us two plates, even though there were three of us in our party. The bus boy had to come back with a third plate after we flagged him down. Then came the main course. The waitress literally slammed our platters onto the table with an angry scowl and seriously contemptible attitude. The food was sloppily presented as if it had been dumped upon the plates, and BURNT to the point that my sauce was actually visibly SINGED BLACK. Keep in mind, these entrees were expensive, serving them burnt is unacceptable! I've never seen such poor quality. Low and behold, there was cheese baked inside the food, despite our request for no cheese. We weren't at all rude to this woman, there was no excuse for such poor service. My grandfather still tipped at least 20% because my grandparents are kind. My grandma is just the sweetest nicest lady in the world, and the whole ordeal gave her terrible anxiety and she had to take xanax to calm herself down. Our service at Papa Joes literally ruined her day. I don't think the server took into account that for elderly seniors, going out to dinner might be the most exciting aspect of their day, and to go out with their visiting grandaughter, this might be the most important event to happen all week. So when the server is outwardly rude and unkind, it causes great distress and can stress seniors out, thus distrupting their whole fragile wellbeing. To the people at Papa Joes: if you're having a bad day or don't like your job, fine. But don't take it out on kind elderly people. The employees at Papa Joes should be ashamed of themselves.

Wow, it doesn't get much worse than this. I went here tonight with my friend- who specifically wanted to go for the Two for One pasta Tuesday special. Yea yea I know... You get what you pay for. But these dishes were remarkably inedible. We got the meat ravioli, lasagna, abd cheese tortellini- all of which tasted rubbery, the sauce looked to be out of a can & everything looked & tasted as tho it had been frozen. Waitress was caught off guard by criticism. But she did remove all three dinners from our bill, charged for salad, soup, and drinks (which were all ok). Not going back, wouldn't recommend. ************Ok ok ok ok ok, I'm editing my last post because I went back- not by choice- we had a work luncheon here (holiday party). It was family style fried chicken, pasta/sausage, green beans, salad, etc etc etc AND IT WAS DELICIOUS. I don't know what happened last time but I'm glad I went back. The service was great, food was great and I was pleasantly surprised. I changed my one star to three because I just can't forget my first traumatizing experience last time. Lol

I use to frequent this restaurant for years when I lived in Chicago. Thought it was the best pizza around. Been gone for a while came back on vacation and had to have one of their pizzas. It was terrible, quality has really gone down hill. And the service was poor too. I will no longer recommend Papa Joe's

I've been coming to Papa Joe's for as long as I can remember, or at least since they had the moose head on the wall, smoking was not only legal but encouraged (hell, the waitresses hid their soft packs in the paper towel dispenser in the ladies' room), and The Beach Boys' "Kokomo" was the most popular song on the jukebox. The interior's been through several changes over the years (most notably after the fire), but one thing remains the same: the menu kicks ass. It's lengthy, it's varied, and I've never had anything I didn't like. (The zucchini parm and the basked mostaccioli are personal favorites.) Then there's the bread. Pass me the olive oil (or even the minestrone) for dipping, and I could live on Papa Joe's bread. I'd eventually weigh 900 pounds and have to be crane lifted out of my house by Dr. Phil for an intervention, but it would be well worth it. Finally, don't forget about the pizza. One of my favorite thin crusts in Chicagoland. Papa Joe's has been a family staple since I was a kid, so I'm admittedly biased. But the fact remains that, if you like Italian food, you can't miss at Papa Joe's. One day I'll bring my own kids here and explain to their adorable, skeptical asses why "Kokomo" was brilliant over a big plate of calamari.

Man, this place has gone down in quality and personality. The waitresses are humorless, the sandwiches are inconsistent from one visit to the next. The worst is that now they no longer let you have the bottle of olive oil on the table for bread dipping. They treat it like its gold and you are a criminal for wanting to use it. My kids like kiddie cocktails and depending which winning personality ya get as a waitress, you may or may not have to actually ask for the cherries! Go to Mama Luigi's on harlem or Palermo's on 95th instead (both of which have seen better days as well)

We came here with a groupon $15 for $30 worth of food. We ordered pop and the biggest pizza they had. The waitress brought us bread and oil, and by oil I mean they drizzle it on your plate and don't come back to refill the oil. Most Italian places leave it on the table. Once our pizza came the waitress refilled our empty glasses. The pizza is a lot like the rest of their menu, bland food for the old people that frequent the place. On the pizza the mushrooms were very fresh with a strong flavor, but the sausage was extremely fatty with lots of hard pieces that you couldn't chew. The cheese was what I call "pizza cheese," basically there for the texture, not the flavor. The sauce was very bland, and the "thin" crust was much thicker than Barraco's, but was still somewhat crispy. I think the pizza was a 20" and it came to around $27 just for the pizza. There are so many better options for Italian food in the area that even with another groupon I wouldn't come back.

I just went to Papa Joes. The good news - they give you a lot of food. Each entree comes with a salad, relishes, and a cup of soup. They also have good bread. However, the entrees did not taste that good. I had the cheese tortellini and it was undercooked. The service was also really bad - it took forever to get anything. I didn't eat any if my entree, but they still made me pay for it. There are much better Italian restaurants in the south suburbs.

All I need to say is , "Monday half price thin pizza." Delish and a deal. An 18" pizza pepperoni is about ten bucks.

Went to Papa Joe's this past Friday and must say they had the hottest fresh bread ever. Service was excellent and food was not only good but plentiful enough to take home. Unfortunately the only odd thing was that the stuffed mushroom appetizer only came with three mushrooms If two people are sharing three just doesn't cut it, but they were good.

I've been eating here for the past 30 plus years. Pizza is good especially the Pan Pizza. It might be my favorite around. Sauteed tomatoes, plenty of cheese and toppings. The crust is awesome as well. Fried Mushroom lovers might like the mushrooms. Yummy!! Never had a bad meal here. They now have Pizza specials on Monday. I eat here at least 4 times a month.

I have never been inside the restaurant but have done carry out a multiple of times. They have great customer service and the food is pretty good. Wouldn't say 5 star good but consistant.

A great family restaurant. Lots of good food and a wide variety of menu items. This is the kind of place where you are full from soup and salad before your meal comes.

I've visited Papa Joe's in New Lenox and was pleasantly surprised. So I had to visit the Oak Lawn location. The food is good, especially the Steak Italiano. The menu selection is quite large and you can find something for everyone. The service is good and the restaurant is clean and easy to find.

just went to this restaurant for the first time because if Restaurants.com which is a great website for gift certificates, anyway i took my mom there with the gift certificate and when we sat down and gave the waitress the certificate she told us we couldn't use it that day even though nowhere on the certificate did it say we couldn't use it. Even though i was extremely upset and angry we decided to stay because we traveled about 40 mins to get there. The service was horrible, not only did we wait an extremely long time to get our drink order but she messed it all up. Because we ordered pizza we didn't get any fresh bread. ive never been to a restaurant that didn't give bread no matter what i ordered. The appetizers were so small i ordered garlic bread which was six tiny pieces that could fill up a baby. The cheese sticks tasted like fish. The pizza was actually pretty good and if i didn't have such horrible service i would go back but they defiantly lost a customer for life.
